Description of PerTronix 91181 Ignitor Adaptive Cylinder

Adaptive dwell maintains peak energy throughout the entire RPM range, reducing misfires while improving engine performance. Develops on average 4 times more available energy between 3000 and 5000 RPM, and 2 times more available plug voltage. Compensates for inherent electronic delay by adjusting the spark timing throughout the entire RPM range. Synchronized peak current and spark timing reduces heat build-up. Senses startup and develops more energy for quicker, easier starting.

Rebuild of my 1972 Chevy C10

I purchased and installed a PerTronix Ignitor II and Flamethrower II 45,000 volt coil on my 1972 Chevy C10 pickup and noticed a HUGE difference in overall performance. Commissioning is easier and faster; Throttle response throughout the powerband is significantly improved. I was skeptical, but now I'm a firm believer. Ditch the goggles/capacitor system and supply coil and run this one, you won't regret it.

  • Free for educational purposes
Cons
  • Minor repair

No more exposure settings

Works fine once I set it up. I would give it five stars but I had trouble setting it up and must have assembled and disassembled it at least a dozen times to get it to spec. I ended up having to remove the transfer case to add another washer. They provide all the parts needed and the instructions are clear but it's still not 100% to spec but still works great with my '57 Chevy.

Very easy to install

If you're worried this is going to be a big project, don't be shy, it can easily be done in an hour. My install took 2 days because I decided to take the whole distributor apart and clean, paint and oil the whole block, after 40 years I thought it deserved it. In my opinion this block has eliminated all the performance issues I've had with the ignition because you just install it, set the timing and you're done. I also replaced the spool with a PerTronix Flame Thrower 2 spool, it was slightly…

Poor quality of the igniters

Very poor quality of the magnet sleeve, the magnets are covered with a mylar cover and when heated this cover can crack and the magnets fly into your distributor (see forums and reviews with low stars) (do not remove cover, also not specified in instructions and very confusing). I was very motivated to replace the goggle system with this conversion kit because it reports more reliability, but for $100+ I was expecting at least glued magnets or a plastic cover to hold them in place rather than a

Pros
  • Practical thing

  • There are problems

Doesn't work for me.

I bought this Petronix to replace my old one. I have no problems with the one installed which I just wanted to replace before it fails. When I received it, I noticed that the edge of the Mylar tape on the magnet was peeling off a bit, but I didn't care too much about it. I had good spacing between the modules and there was no interference. After 3 months of trouble free driving, my car wouldn't start this morning. After fixing everything I found a spark so I removed the distributor and found…
