Does the job perfectly

This tester does exactly what it was designed to do. Contrary to some reviewers, I had no trouble reading the lights. The readings were what I expected, knowing my outlets were plugged in (and confirmed with a multimeter). the test button on this tester to turn off the outlet. This is not a product defect; Socket testers will only trip a GFCI socket if ground is connected. The test button *on the outlet* should always break the circuit if wired correctly. So if your GFCI is not grounded, you…

Simple, inexpensive, hassle-free

Just works. The instructions are clear. I can't fault that, especially the price. Some people complain about difficulties reading the panel on the device. For me it was no problem. Also, if you did your job correctly, you would only light the two rightmost bulbs each time (good wiring and grounding). Of course, this isn't just a GFCI tester. It will check any three-prong outlet and give you an idea of how it's connected (e.g. if the ground circuit is open or the neutral is swapped to ground…

Everyone should have one

I bought one of these when I bought my house. I had a home inspection, but I still wanted to make sure everything was done right no matter what. This will tell you very quickly if there is a problem. I also used this to more precisely locate where the GFCI schemas are located. I found that my kitchen outlets are NOT GFCI protected! The?! Of course I had to fix it. My home inspector also told me that my garage power plug was not GFCI protected, but it turns out it was (same circuit as bathroom…

Helps get a quick overview of a property

I work in the renovation industry and one of the biggest hurdles when evaluating the work on a property, especially an old one, is the cost of electricity. If the institution has Knob & Tube, we immediately know how to rate it. But some people over the years have replaced their two-pronged outlets with grounded outlets; except that there really is no mass on the box. And the same people often trade hot and neutral lines. Now I can go through the setup (usually empty) and test 90% of the outlets

Pros
  • Easy to use
Cons
  • Very expensive

We are adding some outlets to our kitchen and need to figure out which outlets are controlled by which switches. We decided to do what we should have done years ago, which was to map the entire house. Now we know which switch to turn on/off for each outlet and light source in the house. With all this information we created a table and then also wrote it on the control panel with permanent marker. Okay, that's the backstory, but what does that have to do with this tester. This tester made the…
