Refractometer does not read the correct volume percentage of alcohol (except for water if you have calibrated it). For a starter kit beer with a target ABV of 5.5%, the refractometer reads 16% ABV. For the other batch, which should be slightly stronger, 22% vol. Dry red wine with 11% alcohol shows 18-20%, and with sweet fortified wine with 18% alcohol the refractometer readings go off the scale (I understand that sugar affects the readings).

cheap refractometers are terrible for strong alcohol. Nothing above 75% indicates a different reading. A variable area flow meter is much better in the high division range. If you want a really accurate reading, you need to measure the density with a scale of varying accuracy and a reference volume, find the ABV on the chart, and be sure to temperature correct the density.
