Great Laymans Tool - Refractometer

This tool is perfect. I make wine, not every batch tastes good, so I distil. It's difficult to measure actual ABV, but it lets me know when I'm at least over 80%.

Pros
  • Includes: hard plastic case, refractometer, cleaning cloth, screwdriver, instruction manual, several pipettes.
Cons
  • Quality

Inexpensive and accurate

I have tested this on a much more expensive refractometer, a hydrometer, and on several commercial spirits. Very accurate but a bit hard to read when you get close to 80%. Definitely worth the price

Pros
  • It is portable and requires no battery, it is easy to learn and use even for a new user.
Cons
  • Appearance

Bad evidence

I like this refractometer. It is easy to read and you don't have to worry about the hydrometer falling off. I've found that he doesn't like reading very high ABVs (around 75-80%). That is why it is good to have both an areometer and a refractometer.

Pros
  • Automatic temperature compensation minimizes the influence of temperature on the test result.
Cons
  • Expensive

Not accurate for liquids with low alcohol content

Tried a whiskey machine with 46% alcohol and saw a reading of around 45%. Tried a red wine labeled 12.5% and got a reading of 25%. I tried black coffee and read almost 5%. Distilled water gave me 0%. This device does not seem to work well with liquids with low alcohol content.

Pros
  • Scale range: 0-80% v/v (v/v - percent alcohol by volume), division: 1% vol/vol.
Cons
  • Useless functions
