We definitely prefer softened butter at the table, and this marble crock keeps a quarter pound fresh and spreadable on the counter for a week or more. I wash it by hand and let the stick of butter come to room temperature before adding it to the round bowl. I've never had a problem with oil falling into water or spoiling. In fact, we forgot the filled pot and left it in our country house for four months, and the oil looked great when we discovered it! (Of course we didn't eat it.)

My family loves bread and we like to spread butter on our bed afterwards. This oil jar is beautiful, matches my kitchen decor, holds a full pack of oil, easy to clean and works for the most part. I ordered 2 marble butter dishes in this style and both arrived with broken lids. I think there must be a lot of packaging material for this to arrive intact. So I don't really understand if it's because of the fragility of the marble or the lack of packaging material every time. It's been really nice every time and I know the texture of marble would keep my oil nice and cool. Spring. Revane was great and took it back.
