if you need a nitrate solution. Don't waste time on this product

I've kept fish most of my life (I'm in my 50's). If you're serious about nitrate control, I have 4 experiments running = first Biohome Ultimate in a cichlid swamp (55 gallons, waiting for results, not entirely convincing, no positive nitrate results after 3 months, love the concept, but science is science) . Second, downsized wooden ship bioreactor for my dark water tank (55 gallons) = 20-30% nitrate reduction after 3 months. Third, 30-gallon community tanks with a 10-gallon sump of water…

Pros
  • pore size good for anaerobic bacteria
Cons
  • unreliable

Saved my fish, aquarium and time!

I bought a 5.5 gallon aquarium and a goldfish before doing some research to find out what type of aquarium a goldfish really needs. Well, for those of you who don't know, this tank size is too small for goldfish as they produce large amounts of ammonia which then converts to nitrite and eventually nitrate (not to mention the tank is just too small to continue his own). I monitored the water daily and was distraught when I finally saw the toxin levels rising. I used API AmmoChips as soon as I…

Pros
  • High Porosity Environment

  • Disappearance

takes time but works great!

I put this in a Fosbane reactor with two small fish connected to a 50 gallon per hour reduced flow pump to create a nitrate reactor. it was almost 2 months before he started looking into anaerobic bacteria growth and all that. I was really starting to think it wasn't really going to work. But the wait was worth it! I made this for my overflowing Oranda goldfish tank. There are about twice as many fish as should be in my 40 gallon tank. I know all the other goldfish lovers want to scold me. but…
