I've kept fish most of my life (I'm in my 50's). If you're serious about nitrate control, I have 4 experiments running = first Biohome Ultimate in a cichlid swamp (55 gallons, waiting for results, not entirely convincing, no positive nitrate results after 3 months, love the concept, but science is science) . Second, downsized wooden ship bioreactor for my dark water tank (55 gallons) = 20-30% nitrate reduction after 3 months. Third, 30-gallon community tanks with a 10-gallon sump of water hyacinth. Amazing results, 30-50% less nitrate in one week. WARNING = If you want to test the concept of water hyacinth, never let this plant outside, it is an invasive plant = Be responsible, you will also need a powerful full spectrum LED light to keep the plant alive. Last but not least, the BCB basket (view on YouTube), pending 3 month bacterial growth mark, results pending. The Seachem Nitrate medium had no effect on the water parameters (3 months/6 months/12 months) dammit. Don't get me wrong, Seachem is a good company, but not this product.
