Description of Seachem Flourish Excel Carbon Supplement for Enhanced Bioavailability

CARBON PRODUCTION: All plants require a source of carbon, and Flourish Excel is a great and convenient source of bioavailable organic carbon. IRON PRODUCTION: Flourish Excel also possesses iron reducing properties, thus promoting the ferrous state of iron (Fe+2), which is more easily utilized by plants than ferric iron (Fe+3). PHOTOSYNTHESIS: Plants must produce longer chain carbon compounds (photosynthetic intermediates). By dosing with Flourish Excel you bypass the involvement of chain carbon compounds, and introduce the already finished, structurally similar compounds. TREATMENT: On initial use or after a major (> 40%) water change, use 1 capful of Flourish Excel (5 mL) for every 40 L (10 US gallons). Thereafter, use 1 capful for every 200 L (50 US gallons) daily or every other day. For smaller dosing please note that each cap thread is approximately 1 mL. SAFETY: Flourish Excel is completely safe for fish, however if you have Anacharis in an aquarium in which you are dosing Flourish Excel, then it is recommended to use it every other day rather than daily.

Not Worth it: Terrible Aquarium Treatment

Pet supplies can be pricey, especially when it comes to aquarium water treatments. Thanks to my knowledge gained in practice, I'd advise against purchasing this particular item. While it does have some positive qualities, like potentially helping plants in your tank grow, the negative effects greatly outweigh the good. This product can cause harm to fish and other aquatic life, which makes it not worth the investment. Save your money and look for a safer alternative.

Pros
  • Provides plants with essential nutrients and promotes healthy growth.
Cons
  • Requires daily dosing for optimal results.

Works well against Black Beard Algae (BBA)

I bought this specifically to control Black Beard Algae (BBA) in my shrimp tank. I used an inexpensive syringe (broad tip, no hypodermic opening) to inject the recommended amount (5ml per 10 gallons) directly into the BBA area once a day each day. It's been five days and it's working pretty well. When dying, blackbeard algae will turn gray or gravel in one day and bright pink or red in a day or two. It is currently bright pink or red. The algae directly where the syringe was triggered turned…

Pros
  • CARBON PRODUCTION: All plants require a carbon source and Flourish Excel is an excellent and convenient source of bioavailable organic carbon.
Cons
  • Slightly wrinkled

So far so good for shrimp safety and plant growth.

At the time of writing this review I have been using this product for 2 months in 2 different aquariums. 29 gallon tank, fully planted, high power LED light, pressurized CO2 system and 5 gallon nano tank with medium to high CO2 free LED lighting. 29 gallon tank I use this product along with micro and macro dosing just for experimentation. with maximum plant growth and color, not as a substitute for CO2 or algae control. Can't tell if this makes much of a difference as the aquarium is healthy…
