3 times bad hard drives. not so good

After buying and using this product for over a year, I had to return the 1st disc due to a defect. up to 90 days. Seagate sent another replacement and now the third drive failed last night 120 days after receiving the replacement. If I didn't have a second drive on the back, all my data would be lost. I have a digital photo of my family from the mid 90's. Okay, I understand that everything is falling apart. but 3 bad disks. Someone needs to kick the Seagate QA team out because that's not…

Bought in August, died in November - Seagate says no guarantee!

Wow what a disappointment. This was purchased in August as an external backup device for my computer. My computer is powered by a Tripp-Lite backup battery, and power also flows through one of my high-end surge protectors. There have been no surges or storms since I bought it. I've been in the computer industry since the 1980s, so I'm very knowledgeable about how systems work and what can cause damage. No temperature fluctuations, the drive has never been bumped or moved. Nothing. Today I…

Pleasantly Surprised

At first I was wary of the number of stars in the reviews on this drive because it's A) from Seagate, which seems to have had a bad reputation lately, and B) most 5 Star ratings are voice ratings of free products. In the last year or so I've come to the conclusion that these elite reviewers would rather leave their free stuff than leave honest reviews. but who am I to judge. I would probably do the same. Aside from making calls, this disc is damn fast. I was surprised at how quickly it wakes up

Attention buyers: SMR drives

First of all, it should be pointed out that these are SMR drives. What is SMR? This means Shingled Magnetic Recording, basically the data on the disc is overlapped, like shingles. This means you can get more data on each platter of the hard drive, therefore fewer platters for a given size, and therefore the hard drive is cheaper. OK, that's great, isn't it? Well, the problem is that it EXTREMELY slows down the write speed for long consecutive writes. It can get stuck on large writes and become…

Buy Something Else Good for Storage

Summary: Pay the extra $20 and get something better. Find out why, read below. I bought this hard drive on Prime Day and thought I got a good deal. It turned out that everything was fine for the first few months, although the data transfer rate wasn't as high as I expected. I haven't used it much. I only used it as a fallback. In the best case, I've used it 10 times and transferred 2TB. Now 5 months later this hard drive is not working properly. I had corrupted data on it (I was lucky…
