I've had trouble with hard drives for this system in the past. After reading reviews here about successful installs on other PS3 systems, I bought it. I need to read the screen when installing software I haven't seen. I mean press Select and Start at the same time. This allows the system to search for software in other sources. Anything after that and I upgraded my hard drive from 40GB to 500GB. This drive size is larger than any new system you could buy. I also saved over $300 on a new system.

I only bought this to upgrade my PS3 hard drive from the included 80GB to 500GB with this Seagate Momentus.
