Good quality stone: whetstones

I received this whetstone on time over the weekend and it appears to have been well packaged. The quality of this stone is good on both sides. The only thing that struck me right away when I first started using it is that the base has a slight kink so it doesn't lay flat on the surface and tend to twist or turn when I use it . Annoying at best. My solution is to add cabinet bumpers to the bottom as legs to fix this. But the problem still persists and I want it to work as intended right out of…

Should work if you know how. However these blocks are defective

I have used the stone as directed in the brochure and have seen that the stone is in fact polished. This can be confusing for beginners since you only have 1 corner and 2 grains. If your knife has a blade at a different angle, you will be grinding a lot of metal. And the result may not be the best. However, this can probably be remedied with experience. There really is something about these whetstones that confuses you. After a few hits, you'll likely find imperfections like nuggets and rocks…

Good Starting Stone - Hand & Power Tools

Great stone for learning! Let it soak for about 5 minutes until it stops bubbling. It definitely works well with the right technique. You have to use the right technique or you won't have much luck with any whetstone. I have made many knives that cut paper sharply, this stone alone does the job. Other than that I learned a lot from it but have since moved on to nicer and bigger stones. The 1000 side of this stone wears out quickly with heavy use. But for the average home cook who only wants to…

Uses Technique: Whetstones

Getting the correct and consistent angle is very difficult. This whetstone comes with an angled guide, but it's ALSO tricky to use (difficult to fit onto the back of the blade). This is a skill you just have to learn. There's a reason you pay for professional knife sharpening. On the other hand, it's not too difficult to learn. I watched a YouTube video, sharpened a knife and everything is fine. Sharpened another, scratched the blade and didn't run very well. I watched another video, learned…
