They get pretty hot even at 150 watts so I cover them with a wire cage which is used to protect reptiles from touch even in my chick brooders. You don't need 250-watt fire monsters to keep little ones warm.

They bought these in their reptile cages, they use cheap solder on the electrode connection which screws into the socket and after about a month it melted and wouldn't make a proper connection anymore. If you are looking for a very temporary release this will work, but not a long term heating device.

The lamp worked fine for about 4 months before it started turning itself off. I started with a large lamp and placed it on the shelf along with the bracket. I tried reusing the lamp socket with a new heat lamp and it didn't go in properly. I look at the old lamp and notice that the tip is missing and realize that it is actually stuck in the lamp socket. I will not buy again.

I went from 50w to 150w and the quality between the two in terms of thermal control is incredibly clear (50w was branded which obviously isn't the case). The device works great and keeps the snake tank at the right temperature, but for the first week I was bothered by the lingering smell and how hot the device was. Now I've adjusted some temps and the hood doesn't feel hot, but I'd be very careful with that! There is nothing flammable nearby!

I got it for my RES. She really needs a warm place to sunbathe. I have it about 13-14 inches from where it should be and the temp is pretty cold. There is heat, but no heat. I would have thought that at 150 watts that would actually generate heat. Also, I just replaced the first one I bought. The first didn't even last close to 10,000 hours. More like 2500 hours.
