Freshman - Fish & Aquatic Pets

This is my first aquarium and a skilter was recommended to me. It's been running for a month now and I haven't had any issues, it's easy to clean too.

Pros
  • New to my collection
Cons
  • Not everything fits

Poor design and quality for 89.00

The suction power is not enough for the job. Then the engine died after 2 days. Difficulty assembling and loose fitting of parts. Good concept but big failure.

Pros
  • Don't waste too much time
Cons
  • Can I add anything

Skilter needs development

Skimmer too noisy. I had to modify the unit by drilling a hole in the top and using a wooden diffuser in place of the built in venturi. It glides very well and now runs silently.

Pros
  • Few competitors
Cons
  • Socket required

Just doesn't work with filters

I thought this would be the perfect filter but it just doesn't work. A protein skimmer won't produce enough foam to be useful unless you turn it on hard enough to fill the entire filter with air, so pump oxygenated water into your tank and even then it won't work. Good idea if they could improve it a bit.

Pros
  • Crossing my fingers
Cons
  • Neutral

Impeller works best with aquarium pumps and filters

I used to love Skilter filters for my brine tanks. I only have fish tanks so I don't need a high end skimmer. That was excellent. However, quality control should be reduced. This thing literally stopped working every day. The built in impeller will pinch and then sit and heat up all day. You have to disassemble and reassemble the intake impeller assembly only to have it stall after a few minutes or hours. Finally I broke the seat of the gray impeller and put it in the engine. It's free, but now

Pros
  • Quality construction
Cons
  • Upgrades available
