By using carpeted scratching posts, you are teaching your cat or cats that carpet or fabric is good for scratching, and they do not differentiate between your mat and your scratching post. Don't fret about them scratching your furniture and carpets. Cardboard works great, and the cat won't mistake it for anything. If your cat loves catnip, add catnip (my crazy cat doesn't like catnip so I don't add it), but she loves cardboard.

Update 09/30/2017: My cats love them, we keep 3 at the same time in different rooms of the house. I have this as part of my Revain subscription and am saving and throwing away the shredded one. There have been design changes lately, the box has definitely become more durable and somehow treated with catnip so the packaging doesn't come with catnip separately. If this was just my review it would have received 1 star due to the sheer amount of dust and cardboard fragments everywhere , everywhere, everywhere. when opening and configuring this scratcher. It's narrower than I expected (more so than the super cheap Trader Joes, which have only one downside: they're not angled).
