I have never used a wheel rim cleaner on my car until I tried two different products last month. I've used a car wash and occasionally used the option to clean wheels, but this only works well when cleaning wheels. Whatever dirt/dirt is left and over time the wheels get dirtier and dirty from brake dust and dirt, the automatic car wash can't handle it.
