Okay, here's my conclusion. You need a set-top box to use this recorder. The video quality is very good, much better than my Liteon (matte color) and a bit worse than my Panasonic (great color). I've had this DVD player/recorder for 7 months now and haven't had any of the problems others are having. The one I ordered was new, not refurbished, so maybe that helped.
