Excellent projector --- 6 years ago.

I have owned this projector for 5 years now and love it. I was shocked to see it being sold here for $2600. A brand new modern projector with greatly improved performance can be purchased for around $2,000. I'm in the process of upgrading mine and doubt I can sell my VPL-HS20 for more than $500 or so. (By the way, I only paid about $2,000 for this device 5 years ago.)

Pros
  • Good stuff
Cons
  • Can I add something?

Beautiful colors, lots of inputs

Beautiful colors on the HS-20. No door grill or stationary panel noise. Some reports on convergence issues. Many input options have made this a choice over other units of measurement. Cons: You may need to purchase some expensive cables ($50) for the analog VGA input if you use the HDMI port. Also, the HDMI port is of poor quality when used with VOOM. Could be a problem with all HDMIs. The DVI (and component) input looks good. See avsforum dot com for more discussion.

Pros
  • Component, S-Video, Composite, HD-HDMI, Mini-USB and Audio inputs

the wow factor is still there after 2 years.

Personal experience After much research I finally decided on this device. I hooked up my HS20 to a Toshiba HD DVD player and it looks fantastic. To be honest, it's hard to tear yourself away from the unit. The picture is so good. Had a friend come to see Matrix and the superlatives were flying. Just like in the theater, there was a remark. The device is quiet. Everything is fine with the remote control, and the manual could have given more precise information about the device. If I had one…

Pros
  • CineMotion 3:2 drop-down menu provides more detailed image; Memory Stick slot for JPEG and MPEG digital images
Cons
  • Expensive

It's worth the money if you can get a good slice.

I received my first HS20 in early January 2004. It didn't run out of the box. The lamp/cover indicator kept blinking no matter what I did. Sony support couldn't help me over the phone. I returned it. I decided to give Sony another chance. Got a second one in 2 weeks. This had a strange problem: when I rotate the image via the menu (required for ceiling mounting), light and dark vertical stripes appear across the entire screen. I sent it to a Sony service center in Laredo, Texas to have it…

Pros
  • resolution 3.2 megapixels; sends 1080i, 720p, 480i and 480p pictures
Cons
  • will be added later
