Standard Horizon HX300 Handheld Marine Review

I'm too old to understand what new technologies can do. I like this radio because it is easy to use. I was able to use it right away and the manufacturers made a battery case to hold Aaa batteries in case the lithium battery ever dies.

Compact, easy to use, lightweight and quick to charge when you need it. This is the second Horizon handheld I own and I've been happy with my first HX750S which has lasted almost 10 years. The new one works the same. Used in Port Huron Mackinac racing and driving sailboat races.

Went on a sea kayak safari and one charge lasted all 3 days of the trip without nearly draining the battery. I assume that we can use a few more days for free. Being able to follow the weather forecast on the coast was a real benefit and saved us some difficult crossings. Easy to set up, easy to use, we will be buying another one so next trip we will have two.

Before I decided on this device, I carefully studied everything. I chose it because it has the largest battery (1800mAh) and the highest water resistance (IPX8) - both better than the competition. Plus, USB charging (to charge with the same power bank I use to charge the phone) is done by a long-standing commercial-grade Japanese company, and the price is excellent value. The device feels and works as it is. Setup is a little clunky, but once set up it's easy to use. Very happy with my choice.

I really appreciate that this thing can be charged via USB. You don't have to do it often because the battery lasts quite a long time. It never died for me, but I always keep it loaded. As a docking assistant, I need the ability to switch from 5 watts to 1 watt. The HX300 makes this quick and easy.
