PLUG & PLAY: The standalone USB 3.0 (USB 3.1 Gen 1) hard drive eraser lets you wipe a 2.5"; 3.5" SATA hard drive or SSD, including 4Kn drives, without having to connect to a host computer. ERASE DRIVES CONFIDENTLY: The IT grade external drive wiper supports nine erase modes and meets global requirements, including NIST (SP 800-88 Rev1) standards, ensuring all drives are properly wiped. MONITOR ERASE STATUS & KEEP LOGS: The hard drive sanitizer dock can connect to an RS232 serial printer to print a record of the erase procedure, and the LCD lets you monitor performance and completion. BACKUP BEFORE ERASING: The SSD/HDD eraser can also be used as a 1-bay hard drive dock (with 5Gbps host connection) when connected to a USB 3.0 computer, letting you back up or test your SATA drive

Well made block, does what it promises (didn't try to type)

Bought to clean drives without using a computer. This well-made device comes well packed in a cardboard box. It is very intuitive to use. Note that cleaning up large drives may take some time. A 7-pass wipe (VSITR) on a 6TB drive takes approximately 2.5 days. Maybe 7 passes is overkill, but be aware. It seems that the bottleneck is basically the drive itself. For example, SSDs wear out faster compared to HDDs.

Pros
  • Looks good
Cons
  • For old

Easy to use. does what it says

I only bought this for the disk cleanup feature, so I won't talk about the docking station or the receipt printing features. This, as they say, makes disc erasing easier. I use several smaller Samsung/WD Red SSDs ranging from 256GB to 512GB in a home lab set up to experiment with different filesystems. It completes the one-pass erase in about 15 or 30 minutes. Large discs take time. A single-pass erase of a 10TB Seagate Iron Wolf Pro drive takes approximately 14 hours.

Pros
  • Free for educational purposes
Cons
  • Periodicity

Worked really well for me

Bought a few months ago, probably erased about a dozen discs by this point. Just push the button and go. I haven't broken anything so far. Much easier than Boot-n-Nuke.

  • Sturdy finish

Works well when not connected to a computer

I like the fact that you can clean the hard drive without connecting it to a computer. One of the processes literally took three hours to complete a few wipes. This works well because I've already made 10 floppy disks and it gives you what we put on the end which you can print out if you order a printer with a serial port.

Pros
  • Great for outdoor activities
Cons
  • Almost everything is fine

Epson TM-U220B printer works with this docking station!

Insert a disc and press OK to erase the data. Very easy to use. Tried esc/pos printer, doesn't work. I will try Epson tm-u220b and report back. Epson tm-u220b works great, got a refurbished unit on ebay for $130.

Pros
  • Quality construction
Cons
  • Clarity

Great standalone eraser for our use.

I only use it as a standalone hard drive cleaner - it's hooked up to an old HP receipt printer. It's been 6 months and I've erased over 300 drives with no problems. I usually use 7-pass (VSITR) on every drive we throw away. Use this process and just to be sure; I connected multiple drives to my computer after cleaning. I then launched several different file recovery programs such as R-Studio; I have never been able to find any trace of the file. Everything works great in the end - insert discโ€ฆ

Erases great but requires a 90's printer

If you want to wash it that's great. However, they shouldn't even advertise the print feature. This requires an ESC/P compatible printer. Almost all receipt printers available today (and since Superman III came out) are ESC/POS. Since then, even the ESC/P2 command has appeared. Oh well! Startech really needs to update this to the 2000s. Excellent eraser. Technically very disappointing; It would be great, it's almost mandatory to be able to confirm to customers that the drive was erased by DOD.

Pros
  • Electronics
Cons
  • No machine

Useful device

We were happy about it and found other uses for it. If the HD is questionable, this is an additional device to test. However, when I decided to update the firmware, I encountered problems since the original drive had to be installed in the device. It has to be FAT23, which is difficult with large drives. I suggested StarTech make a SATA to USB adapter that would make this task easier. But even more important since we often exchange USB sticks in my region. This would be a great standaloneโ€ฆ
