Sharpen planer and jointer knives to a razor keen edge without removing them from cutterheads. The honing tool features two 400 grit stones. Flat stone for sharpening bevels and a diagonal stone for flat edges. Each stone has four surfaces, which can be adjusted to provide a fresh sharpening surface.

Works well in my application

I bought this to try and sharpen some knives on an old Shopsmith jointer my dad had given me. The jointer only has 4 inch blades so there isn't much room to move this sharpener around to sharpen the blades. I'm sure it will work much better on a 6" or 8" jointer, but for my application it doesn't work that well.

PROS: Blades stayed sharp long enough to finish my deck CONS: Couldn't remove nicks; Whetstones are very fragile. DETAILS: I had an old Craftsman plane and couldn't find replacement blades. I needed the blades to be sharp enough to finish my deck. My deck was +325 sqm. Feet without counting the stairs. I had unhardened, unplaned boards. I carefully planed the front and sanded the remaining side into a rough shape for easy drying. The sharpener allowed me to sharpen in place long enough to get…

This is for sharpening your blades.

If you have good access to your planer knives without removing them and you understand the mechanism of knife sharpening, you can use this inexpensive tool to sharpen knives in place. If your blades are sharp, this tool will help you keep them sharp between uses with little effort. Don't wait until your blades are dull and chipped as this tool is not designed to restore worn blades. In my experience, leveling plane irons between uses is the only option.
