Pleasantly surprised

Wasn't expecting much given the low price and conflicting reviews. I enjoy this case more! Easier than pulling out a knife or slicer. I didn't even sharpen it - I straightened the blade and started. A mesquite rock formed, hard as a rock, and its structure is constantly changing. I am addicted! For the price I'll buy a second one and set it up to be seen through thin shavings so I don't have to fiddle with settings when I'm closer to completion.

  • Everything is fine!

Too much paint on uneven soleplate

About an hour after removing the paint, leveling the soleplate and sharpening the blade, everything was up and running. I used it to shape the handle of an oak hammer. The settings are not precise, so it takes time to get the blade depth right for use. Now I understand why other brands sell them in pairs. I won't be a daily user but this did the work I needed to do. Given the low cost, the prep time was worth it. The only problem was that after a few days on the bench the sole had already…

Get what you pay for

Enjoy reading the reviews after your purchase. From low-quality scrap to high-quality assembly. Are the reviewers talking about the same product? I'm on the fence right now. I'll try it. Setup instructions would be nice but I guess if you've used this design plane you already know it. Appears like a new, unused item. The blade feels sharp despite being set very crookedly. I think that's where I'll learn about customization. I'll be back if I don't find out; I'm trying to avoid a large grinding…

Thread problem with adjustable set screw

Arrived today with a loose brass set screw not attached to the tool. I figured out why because the threads don't match the tool. The seller or manufacturer packed it anyway unwrapped. The middle screw works in the same hole, so it's a thread issue. Very annoying. I will buy a better razor. This is when "you get what you pay for". Bought a $2 set screw from a hardware store when I brought in a poorly threaded screw. Plan B was to return the spokes if no hand screw could be found. A worker at a…

[It's less than $10, right? I would like Veritas or Lie-Nielsen 15 times more expensive. This is the one I have. It's less than $10, did we talk about that? Yes? Good. Seen that way - ] Somehow it didn't occur to me that there should be a cap screw and not just a set screw. (Let's blame the cognitive problems of old age and illness, shall we?) Tools like this need to be optimized. Level the sole, sharpen the blade. After that it worked perfectly, even without the screw. Then the adjusting screw

Great shave with the best wooden chisels

Good for the price, cool. I almost made my own until I saw one for less than $10. A bit tricky to get the perfect height. I tested it with Purple Heart Switching Grain. Anyone who knows wood knows that it is hard wood. The cereal was great right out of the box. Soft wood shaves like butter. I've redid that thing 20 times, I keep going too deep or not touching it. That's my problem, just saying how much I worked to set it up. Each wood is also different, as softer woods are likely to shave…

Good for starters, bad for durability

Some products give you what you pay for, others will surprise you. In my experience, this one is the last. I used this tool for some canoe paddles I carved for friends last year and the tool worked great. Easily adjustable and works like a charm once properly sharpened. However, after about a month, the materials began to show their true colors as some of the metals began to warp. About 6 months later, the soft brass tension screw on the pressure plate (the large reddish triangular plate shown…
