Works great - just understand it takes A LOT.

Works great - just understand that it takes A LOT of this material to thicken the epoxy. You'll need more than 1 to 1 by volume to get a nice thick paste that doesn't runny.

Pros
  • Comfortable to use
Cons
  • Not fancy

Vertical surface with no sag

I am very happy with this product after researching that I was able to use this product to unlock the "secret" vertical mortar of epoxy companies additives and it gave me the ability to create verticals Epoxy installations on my surfaces don't usually work

Pros
  • Lots of positive vibes
Cons
  • Hard to say

Fit for intended use

Easy to use and good for a small project. You don't need much, so one container will do for quite a while if your projects are small and there aren't many. The amount required depends on your application and project size. I use them for epoxy molds and have had no problems so far.

Avoid this colloidal silica

This product used to thicken polyester resin was lumpy. I believe the packaging was leaking and absorbing moisture from the air. Anyway it was so useless so I worked it out on a small diameter sieve, crushed the big clumps and tried to use it. If I threw it away it would have left a surface full of holes when I sanded the tops of the lumps.

Pros
  • Decent performance
Cons
  • Can't remember

As advertised; careful when opening.

Use caution when opening - wear safety goggles and/or a mask, keep it away from you or do it in an area with plenty of fresh air as it "Blow"can" and the very fine powder is very annoying (note: totally non-toxic) and a minor nuisance to clean up. I'd prefer the containers to be less full for that reason, or... maybe a cap? Also, the product is exactly as advertised.

Pros
  • Nice packaging
Cons
  • Not bad but...

Does exactly what it's supposed to, thickens the tar.

I used this to seal the finish gelcoat when repairing chips I had on the underside and stern edges of my bass boat's hull after encountering sunken boulders while fishing. While some of the silica powder is clumpy in the container, as some reviewers point out, it doesn't matter since you'll be mixing it with gelcoat resin anyway. I couldn't have done a patch repair without it and would definitely buy it again.

Pros
  • Absolutely amazing!
Cons
  • No automatic

The simple solution was to get a new two-stroke bike.

This silica thickener was too clumpy for my liking, straight out of the bucket. Lumps made it difficult to mix with the epoxy quickly. The easy fix was to grab a new two-stroke oil gauge cup and some glass beads to grind a few batches perfectly fluffy. Each game lasts only a few minutes. With all that epoxy/fiberglass prep, I don't mind taking a few extra minutes to "chock back" that thickener. We have bought and will buy again.

Pros
  • Sturdy construction
Cons
  • Flaws

Lumpy but works

Works but lumpy as others have said. I tried drying it in the oven, thinking it was moisture. After spending some time in the oven I placed a few bags of silica in the container hoping this would help keep the humidity down, but neither the oven nor the bags helped. It stayed lumpy. I have a kitchen sink strainer that I use over a can of mixed epoxy when I want to add silica. I just push it through the sieve with my finger and break up any lumps into a fine powder. It works, but using a…
