Lightly flashed to AC68U

Bought 7 of these parts in the last year. Although they're a few years old, they're still great for building cheap mesh networks. The default firmware is useless as it is not updated. However, if you have experience installing custom firmware on routers, you can turn it into a very capable router. There is a good online guide for this, a simple web search should provide results. Reliable router with reasonable Wi-Fi speeds, no performance issues with 6-8 wireless clients connected.

No more ASUS AiMesh function.

For people who are upgrading this router from T-Mobile TM-AC68U to RT-AC68U or RT-AC68P (you can), postpone the purchase. ASUS has implemented a security feature in its latest firmware that prevents T-Mobile router users from using their new AiMesh feature and some other features. At the time of this review, with the new firmware version 3.0.0.4.384_20624-g14d2f02 (it came out two days ago), AiMesh no longer exists. This is being discussed on the forums and looks like it's going to be a game of

Save money, take this and put Merlin on it.

I got one for my sister, flashed it to Merlin and got one myself to see how easy it is. Yes, this is the same hardware as the RT-AC68U (depending on which version of the AC68U you get, newer versions will run at 1GHz, not 800MHz). I can't remember how long it took the first time, but the second time it took an hour or less. Time. I followed bayareatechpros guide to convert it to Asus firmware and then to Merlin. My brother-in-law can now stream music from his mower to his entire yard. The old…

Paid too much for a new, obviously used, not even repaired.

Bought two of these and paid a premium for "new" but received units that are clearly used and not even refurbished. The boxes were marked 'New' which was funny. One device required a factory reset to log in, both had their SSIDs changed. Like most buyers, I updated the firmware and found that one device had a non-default CFE loaded. I would have sent them back but I needed to get the network working and didn't have time to return them. for incorrect product claims, but there is no other way for

Misleading Ad: Clearly a Refund or Refurb

Very upset with this purchase. At this point, having only had it 1 day, it seems functionally fine (hopefully). BUT: It's pretty clear it was a return/open box/repair. NOT new as advertised. When powered on, the router displayed non-default SSIDs and did not respond to default credentials. The device should have been reset to default manually, by me, not by them. I do NOT appreciate a used/returned item being charged a new product price. They didn't even bother to factory reset it, they just…

This device does not come with the original power adapter.

Bought 2 routers in December last year, sold one and kept the other one, although the one I left opened recently and found it not working properly. Plugged in and I can access configuration but Wi-Fi signals (2.4 and 5.0) have no power, I have to be 2 or 3 centimeters away for my phone to see signals when I checked that the adapter power is native , it is not ASUS original. This is very serious because the seller did not notice that despite the fact that it came in the original box, the power…

Pros
  • Fits a lot of people
Cons
  • Some difficulties

As others have said, my router arrived USED. Items were missing, all boxes were open and the router was already configured and password protected. After dusting and hard resetting to remove passwords blocking access to the router, I was able to quickly set up the router with LTE. Modem connected to USB. The speed and range are on par with the AirPort Extreme it replaced, and I've been able to ditch my crappy wired internet and use my carrier's unlimited data plan with a real router that covers…

This device does not come with the original power adapter.

I bought 2 routers last December, sold one and kept the other one, but I recently opened the remaining one and found that it's not working properly in it and can access the configuration , but the WiFi signals (2.4 and 5.0) do not have enough power, I have to be 2 or 3 centimeters away for my phone to detect the signals, when I checked it, I found that the power supply is universal as well as not original ASUS . This is very serious because the seller did not notice that despite the fact that…

what you don't love. This router is exactly the same hardware internally.

A $155 router for only $82. This router inside is exactly the same hardware, such as B. AC68U. This router works great for the average user whether they use T-Mobile Wi-Fi for calls or not. I've seen a lot of people spend a lot of money on routers only to find out they paid an extra $100 for features they can't use. Unless you have 10+ 5GHz devices, tri-band is irrelevant, and most Wi-Fi chips in laptops and phones don't have MU-MIMO and are 866Mbps at best. These ASUS AC1900 routers have a big
