The Tamron 18-250 is a pretty good lens

I bought the 18-250 after I dropped my camera with my Tamron 18-200. It appears to be equally sharp, although some reviewers say the 250 is better than the 200. The 200 had poor lens glide, which the 250 doesn't have, and that alone is a big improvement.

  • Crossing my fingers
Cons
  • No insurance

CAREFUL! There are two versions of this lens for Nikon

Apparently this lens is available in two versions for Nikon. The AF018N-700 does NOT have a built-in autofocus motor. AF018NII-700, yes. If you need autofocus and your camera doesn't have an autofocus motor in the body, make sure you buy a motorized lens. Reading the reviews on this site it seems like people are reviewing two different lenses here, hence the confusion. This lens has no motor. The auto focus works fine with my D300 but not with my D3000.

Everything I expected and more

I've had this lens for about 3 months now and I'm even happier with it than I expected (and I ordered it before it was reviewed). I needed a compact and lightweight "walking" lens of reasonable quality at a reasonable price and was perfectly satisfied. As an amateur photographer using a Nikon D50 SLR, my acceptance may be limited and one day I may need higher quality glass. But so far I am very, very satisfied. After receiving and using it for some time, a very positive review appeared in…

Great lens for SLR lenses

This is a great multi-purpose lens for amateur/beginner and intermediate photographers. I mainly use this lens to photograph my family. It has a wide range of 18-250 (minus the conversion factor, I think it's closer to 24-300). Used it a bit for night shots and it works pretty well. For the price unbeatable. I'm sure a pro could tell you a million wrong things. I didn't notice any image distortion or fisheye effect on any of the images. First I removed the lens hood that came with the kit. It…

Great lens, great price. I regret nothing.

Although I feel the need for VR I'm getting closer to 250mm, this lens works great with my Nikon D70S in ALL cases. I have no complaints, be it focus speed or image quality/sharpness. It has become my favorite lens - 5 stars for the dollar. I had the Nikkor 18-200 VR in mind but for the price I went with this one. I've been using SLRs for 15 years and just switched to digital. I've never had a VR experience and remember constantly having to switch between 18-70 and 70-300. My 70-300 had the…

Good general purpose lens

When I got this lens I was looking for something extremely versatile that I could use on the go so I didn't have to keep switching lenses when I knew it was me war you need a wide range of focal lengths. After more than a year of use it's holding up quite well, although at times it seems to struggle with autofocus more than my other lenses. It seems to perform reasonably well across the range, although like most others it's sharpest in the mid-range. My only major complaint is that there is no…

Pros
  • Consistent test results
Cons
  • Could have gone for a newer model

Cheap Superzoom: Camera Lenses

This is a cheap general purpose superzoom. Bought this for a holiday to dress up my old D200 to take to places I don't want to take my prettier glass and cameras. The optics aren't bad, but the lens is soft for longer focal lengths and has an unremarkable f/3.5-6.3 range that's still on par with most lenses of this type. Tamron's advantage is its impressive 250mm range. There's no VC image stabilization, so at 250mm you'll either need a tripod or use a high shutter speed (the rule of thumb is…
