90% solution at 50% price

I've thought long and hard about paying the extra $700 for the VR version of this lens because I shoot a lot indoors . pictures and I try not to use flash. So far my approach with this lens has been to increase the ISO enough to shoot at 1/100 or 1/125. This has given me reliably sharp photos about 90% of the time. And when they're spicy, they're super spicy. Maybe one day I will sell this lens and buy another one with VR and slightly faster focus, but for now it's the right lens at the right…

Pros
  • Fast f2.8 zoom telephoto lens
Cons
  • Legacy model

I've been using this lens with my Nikon D610 for 6 months now. I am generally satisfied with the image quality of the lens. I've used it on my travels in the US and Europe. I mainly shoot wildlife and portraits. Nothing too heavy, just regular use (less than 10,000 shots in the last half year). In retrospect, would I use the same lens again? May be. Maybe not. The biggest annoyances I find with this lens are 1. the focus (I miss a lot of frames because the focus wanders too much) and 2. it…

Pros
  • Case and lens hood included
Cons
  • No car

I've been using this lens for over a year and thought I'd take some time to add a few comments here for those considering to buy it. First of all I would say that considering the price this is a great deal that allows many photographers to get an F/2.8 lens that is not usually priced at market prices. because there are limits to what it will do. If you read the comments and reviews you will see a pattern. Many people comment on the fact that focusing is either "slow" or often "blurry". If I use

Pros
  • Minimum focus 095m/3740"

  • Poor manual
