Suitable for very short distances

The optical power level in these transceivers is not very high. Okay, maybe 50 meters. I changed the hardware and went with the Ubiquiti switch and transceivers. The fiber length was only about 97 m, but there was no connection. I've tried several pairs and they all had the same problem. I ran TDR and OPM tests. The fiber was excellent, but the power levels from these transceivers were too low to travel that distance. I bought 1G SM Bi-Di transceivers from another supplier and they worked MUCH…

  • Robust construction

Cheap, fast and good. Is this the first time this is possible?

The distance from one side of the house to the other is over 300 feet with wires running up, around and down the walls. Too long for CAT5e but I had to find a way to improve the Wi-Fi and "wired" connection to the cable box on the other side of the house. Someone gave me a 500ft piece of outdoor SM fiber. Two pairs of these $30 GBICs saved the day. My optical LC degrees cost more! Can't wait to get rid of the media converters and upgrade to another Ubiquiti 8-150W switcher then I can add some…

Installed a lot, no problems

I have installed many of these things in switches and routers from EdgeWater, Ubiquiti and Mikrotik. I haven't had a single crash. Sometimes on Mikrotik you need to enable Ethernet auto-negotiation and leave it at 1Gbps/full duplex, but they still work and they're reliable. My longest line is 1.5 km long and I transmit -5.9 dBm and receive -7.8. dBm With attenuators I've tested them down to -22dBm with no issues, so I think they can go much further.

Only works with Unifi/Ubiquity.

The price is the same as other cheap BiDi SFPs. However, these only work with Unifi/Ubiquity hardware, while the others I've used from 10Gtek work with everything. Since you need the right pair of these, unless the other side is Unifi/Ubiquity, this quickly becomes a showstopper. For this reason I'm giving it a low score as it's a common case that goes unaddressed at all and lets many down.

  • Impressive
Cons
  • There is a negative

Great for those cases where you have regular SM in two strands.

Not sure if the dark arts are involved, but I can reliably transmit 1GB over a single SM fiber to Cisco switches. Ideal if you have a regular 2 strand SM and one of the strands is damaged. A pretty essential kit to keep in any field technician's tool box for emergencies.

Pros
  • Excellent overall performance
Cons
  • Expensive
