I can't get speeds over 100Mbps and I can't figure out why.

So my local cable company finally got hold of 20th-century equipment and started offering speeds in excess of 100 Mbps. This poses a problem for many users with older modems and routers, as the top speed is typically 100Mbps and doesn't get any faster. I ended up in that category, so I decided to pay extra for a gigabit ethernet router to get the nice 400Mbps speeds I was promised. I know my internal router already promises 10/100/1000 speeds, but I bought this network interface card (NIC)…

Mixed Results: Internal

I recently upgraded to Gigabit service from my ISP and didn't get the results I expected. My HP desktop is from 2012, so it's an older computer, but it came with an Atheros 10/100/1000 network card. I usually upload around 500Mbps so my grandson tested the speeds on his new laptop. It peaked at over 900Mbps so I thought it might be my old network card and decided to upgrade it. I bought a Ugreen network card and after removing the bottom part for installation I tested it. I didn't get anywhere…

Worked immediately!

I bought this adapter specifically for my VM and it works great. I have an older system (FX 8350 with Asus Sabertooth 990FX AM3+) but had no problems. The physical installation was a bit strange as I had some minor issues with the metal card slots in my case. However, once I hooked it up, I was ready to go. Configured a new NIC via Virt-Manager and set it as a bridged connection, which allowed me to keep communication between host and guest for services/applications like Synergy and Filezilla…

More is not always better.

Very happy with this network card! This is exactly what I needed to fix a specific issue with my onboard LAN controller. The minimum Tx buffer setting on my embedded LAN was too high for some specific applications, causing input lag, and could only be set in increments of 8 buffer units. The buffer ranges for this NIC are Tx=1-128 in increments of 1 and Rx=1-512 in increments of 1. This allowed me to fine tune the buffers according to the amount of Rx and Tx data. And 4 RSS questions! This is…

Not always compatible with PCI-e!

Works great. So why only 2 stars? I bought 3 of them. Each was connected to a current HP desktop computer as a second Ethernet card. The first two worked well when installed in a PCI-e port. If I had stopped there it would have been 5 stars. In the third, a brand new computer, nothing. The computer showed no indication that anything was installed in the PCI-e slot. I've been an IT pro for 30 years now, so I tried all the usual stuff over the next few hours. I was about to give up and order…
