Description of πŸ” Exploring the Macro World with Venus Optics Laowa 24mm f/14 2X Macro Probe Lens for Canon EF Mount

FULL FRAME COVERAGE: The Laowa 24mm f/14 Probe can cover both the standard 35mm full frame and Super35 image sensors. DEEP DEPTH OF FIELD: The wide angle design also means much greater depth of field at close distances (compared to the telephoto macro lens) so that more background details can now be seen. Being able to focus so close but still have deep depth of field is a big advantage for both studio and wildlife photography. LONG TUBULAR LENS BARREL: For traditional macro lenses, you need to get really close to your subject in order to take a good macro shot. But some areas are just simply inaccessible. Thanks to the 15.7 inches (40 cm) long barrel, you can focus really close to the subject but still keep yourself and your camera a reasonable distance away. LED RING LIGHT: Macro photography is about Depth of Field and smaller apertures are usually required. An LED ring light (powered by an optional external battery) is embedded in the lens tip to provide additional lighting for focus assistance. LIGHTWEIGHT DESIGN: Despite the long tubular design, the Laowa probe is actually super light and easy to carry. It weighs only 1.04 pounds.

The lens is excellent. BUT

Excellent lens. But after 2 hours of use, the LEDs on the front stopped working. Tried different batteries and cables. The lens has never been submerged in water (although that doesn't matter) and has been treated with the utmost care (as it is my most expensive lens purchase to date). Very upset that the LEDs stopped working so quickly since I bought this lens, I needed these lights for tight and dark areas.

Pros
  • LONG TUBE LENS BODY: With traditional macro lenses you have to get very close to the subject to get a good macro shot. But some areas are just not accessible. With a 15.7 inch (40 cm) long body, you can focus very close to your subject while still keeping yourself and the camera at a reasonable distance.

Excellent professional quality lens.

Works great like a pro. Clear images of our Red Epic 6k on several commercial shots. Very happy with the results and quality for such a light lens. I highly recommend buying a cine follow focus ring such as from followfocusgears, com. This allows you to focus with the focus motor, which is essential for those macro shots. Also, make sure you have a motorized pusher so you can move the carriage in and out of your little scene smoothly.

Pros
  • LED RING LIGHT: Macro photography requires depth of field and typically a smaller aperture. Ring LED indicator (powered by optional external battery) integrated into lens tip to provide additional illumination for focus assist
Cons
  • Something else

Make sure your camera sensor is very clean!

What a fantastic, unusual lens. I bought this lens solely for underwater macro photography and am very happy with the results. That being said, there are a few things to consider before jumping into it (no pun intended). First, this thing needs a lot of light. a lot of. Even with fairly powerful LEDs just inches from your subject, you still need to crank up your ISO to get a decent shutter speed (f/14 is wide open on the lens!). Consider using studio flashes if you have access to them. Second…
