I just brought my newborn home from the hospital. The Vornado AVH10 arrived today and I installed it in her room. The smell of burning plastic immediately filled the children's room. I touched the heater and my back felt painfully hot. I unplugged it, turned it over and saw that the plastic casing had literally melted (see picture). Even at low levels (around 700W) the unit halves that power when the difference between room temperature and thermostat temperature is small, so there is real energy saving. It's a bit expensive and I think it's covered under warranty. They have a certain failure rate and the seller takes over the guarantee. These are cheap Chinese units, but when they work, they work well. The thermistor fails from time to time. If this is the case, they will send you a new heater. Repairs and spare parts are not offered. The thermistor is easy to replace if you are an experienced DIYer. Purchased 15th December from Revain. The product worked fine. I only use it to warm up my bedroom and then turn off the heating. It's fairly efficient, relatively quiet, and does its job well in my bedroom. The controls are easy to use and overall the device looks good. The heater died yesterday. I've had about 10 portable heaters over the years. Like all small heaters of this kind, the thermostat is basically useless and keeps shifting. The preset temperature always depends on which heater "imagines” the actual temperature. I would disregard this as it's fairly common with heaters in general but is particularly discouraging with a unit this expensive.
