They certainly work well but they don't even come close to the stated distance. For a good open distance with no trees, mountains etc I would estimate a distance of about a mile and a much shorter distance with obstacles in the way. This is my 2nd review for my 2nd set and my score has come down slightly after more use.

Bought post surgery so my wife and I can keep in touch when I go camping in the woods behind the house. You turn off after a mile and I live at sea level. They really aren't necessary anymore. Disappointed and would not have bought them if the reviews described it. Well I think I'll give them to the neighborhood kids as a cool toy.

We love these walkie-talkies! I really appreciate that it can be installed on a charger and not just batteries. We use them to keep in touch with our kids while they play on our property (about 5 acres). We tested them to see how far they can go. I stayed inside and sent my elderly neighbor about a quarter mile away and they were still clean! Highly recommended.

Range is more like a block. The sellers have updated their description with more information about the expected distance. As I haven't tried them out of town I can't confirm the distance limitations. I've had them for a few weeks now, for the price you can't go wrong. It appears to be solidly made of durable material. The included AA batteries are rechargeable and when things get tight you can simply swap them out for AA batteries. The little flashlight isn't that bright, but it's useful and seems to have hands-free functionality that I'm not quite mastering yet. As far as I know the radio is not programmable. This is not a walkie talkie for your dead end kids, these are excellent two way walkie talkies. Now we can go to an apartment in Mexico and keep in touch with our children. This would be a really nice set for young kids but professional enough to keep in touch.
