Excellent welding of cast iron with low carbon steel has been worked out. Uses 100 amp DC and pre/post heat with charcoal. It was hot enough to pierce the rust. Some can operate at 80-90 amps. The puddle flows like water.

I was impressed with how well this rod worked. I heated the cast iron manifold with a propane torch, beveled and welded the edges. Forging a weld with a slag hammer. Wrap it in a sweat blanket and let it cool down slowly. I saved $250 on a new distributor. gotta love it

I used them for SMAW welding a cracked exhaust manifold and they worked very well. I had one rod left so I wanted to try welding cast iron with my plasma welder. I stripped the flux from the rod so it was bright nickel and it welded the cast iron really well. I cut the handle in half and welded it back on, I attach a photo. The flux disturbs the plasma and must therefore be removed.

I have found that Weldcoat Nickel 99 is a fresh bar packaged in a sealed tube. I used it to weld a large crack in heavy gray iron that I had preheated to 450 degrees. Nickel 99 applied easily and the weld pool was easy to control with minimal spatter. This was achieved with a buzzing AC Lincoln box. The cast iron part is back in service and holding up well.

Welding a 100 year old cast iron fence. I started by preheating with a torch and slowly cooling in a fiberglass blanket. Welded at 90 amps and burned a few holes in the casting. Switched to no preheat and no cooling pad and 75 amps. Loading and pouring are at about 65 degrees. Works great, expensive, but works! Short seams. Move down a little 1 inch and start welding again. Then go back where I started. Just ordered more.

I ran out of nickel rod while repairing a cast iron vise that broke. I understood the process and properly prepared all cast iron parts. I was able to heat the part to just over 300 degrees. Attached and did my root pass not knowing how much rod I would need. I only have 3 sticks left. Yes, after a lazy pass, jumping 1-inch balls, I was slowly cooling off in dry sand.
