I'm glad I read through the reviews enough to get to a few that were reasonable in their expectations. Yes, the simulated wood gear base is darker than pictured and is not wood. Works perfectly! Wanted to spruce up a black and white DIY wall clock and the wood is a great compliment. The wood is a little darker in person, but definitely brown in color. The second hand is completely noiseless and the clock actually works really well! Although there weren't any directions in the kit, it was very simple to put together. Clock hands are very delicate so be careful when putting it together! Great buy for a great price.

Arrived broken. Minute hand can not be mounted on the apparatus, once pushed into place, the small brass piece popped off the hand. Also, all three hands came bent. I have this clock on the wall w/o a minute hand, but I am very disappointed with this product. The clock is fine. but. It does come unassembled with no instructions. My husband was able to figure it out after I gave up. The seller was originally unresponsive in providing instructions and only replied with poor English about being closed for a 3-day holiday. Then they replied telling me it was easy and to ask friends and family for help. Finally, I got some pictures taken by a camera phone with the instructions to press firmly.

It looks great in the picture but the gears piece actually is much darker to where you cannot really tell its gears. The hands are ridiculously delicate. I almost sent it back because the hands were so flimsy/delicate, when I was putting it together one hand was slightly bent which made the clock not turn. Terrible! The gears don't move, it looks cheap. The battery wouldn't fit into slot. Once I got it in, the clock wouldn't work. The second hand was bent. DON'T BUY THIS!
