I use them all the time in my steel marking shop. They are also excellent for making reference marks on the forging surface during pre-forging.

I bought these soapstones to write on a slate. You write cleanly and beautifully. The width of the mark is about the width of a pencil lead, giving you more detail than with a piece of chalk, but the writing won't turn out as dark as chalk.

As real estate appraisers we use them to mark hailstorms on people's roofs. That's handy because they're small, like a pencil, but pretty durable. My only complaint is that they are a little flimsy and tend to break if you put enough pressure on them. Otherwise, they do their job of furnishing the property.
