The grip does not match other Shun Premier pens

The grip does not match the quality of other Shun Premier pens. It's not the same finish or craftsmanship. The colors are duller and don't have a glossy finish. The gold rim is uneven and protrudes from the grip. The gold rim has already started to discolour. I'm not sure if it's fake, but it looks like it. Oddly enough, it was made in China. The handle on the left is a sharpening steel compared to a knife.

  • Looks good

A little light but great product

We are gradually replacing our old knives with Shun knives so I wanted a sharpener too. I am very happy with this steel. Our old steel was much heavier than this and some of the comments about it being a bit flimsy are correct. It's not as secure in hand as some of the other styles I've used. In fact, it's very light and slim, just like the range of knives we've bought. It matches our Shun knives and is a great quality product.

  • Great for a small home

Buy with confidence!

*My WAS authentic* When I received the honing stick I also noticed that the wood is not as nice/shiny as my other Shun Premiers. Neither the engraving on the bottom nor the general build quality is missing. Then I read the reviews that questioned the authenticity. I sent it back and ordered it from William Sonoma. This is EXACTLY the same. The box is the same, the quality is the same, there are no documents in the box either. Buy with confidence from Revain. I just wasted a few weeks of my…

Not sure if it's real

This honing machine doesn't look like a real one. The logo is stamped rather than engraved and the look of the honing steel doesn't match the rest of the Premier series of which I own several. Also, there was no information about the product, such as warranty information or the Shun booklet that usually comes with it (which says "inside" on the outside of the box). Unfortunately I will be going back and buying from another seller as this order was completed by Revain.

  • Good thing

  • Makes me nervous

not the best idea, apart from the aesthetics.

Premium knives look so great I almost need a neat display unit to display them. It's so sharp you can cut floating paper. However, this sharpener is not a good idea. You can't use it for avoidance meters. even in capable hands, it's largely useless. Sharpening them [properly] is something of a nightmare. Most local sharpeners don't have the skills or equipment. You can either send them back to Japan to avoid them, or try to find someone in your region/country who knows the correct angle and…

Cons
  • High price

A good example is this steel

Made in China, not Japan. Smooth side for sharpening. Ribbed for weekly sharpening depending on use. I use my Shun knives for work and have experience with steels. The company has a habit of selling reasonably priced products while promoting its legendary reputation among knives. A good example is this steel: the shaft is screwed onto the handle. It's not a solid piece of forged steel. I discovered it by accident - I dropped it on the concrete floor. The angle ring broke off and the threaded…

Pros
  • Combination honing steel with a smooth surface for daily honing, a micro-ribbed surface for weekly maintenance
