New and unusual sock design

I got this book of socks with replaceable soles from Anna Silburg. This is a sock that is knit flat after picking up rib and lifting sts at the top. You make an instep flap of sorts, then work your way back up, picking up the slipped sts on each side until you have a closed toe tube. How you pick up the stitches will determine whether you increase for the toe or instep, and then continue to the heel of the short row. This book is beautifully designed, full of interesting sock knitting patterns from leading designers and a wealth of valuable learning material. However, because the instructions are organized around specific sock projects, it feels more like a pattern book than an accessible guide to sock knitting techniques. Decent Resource

Note: I have never knitted a single sock, not even a training sock. I have been knitting mainly gloves, scarves, hats and baby clothes for three and a half years. It will take time before I have the experience to critique a knitting book effectively, so I hope my beginner's perspective is helpful.
