School/STEM Educator Review of littleBits Invention Kits

Target group: elementary K-5 public school with a STEAM innovative program designation. Our 5th graded gifted/high achiever class assisted with this review, along with other reviews for littleBits invention kits that we purchased.Pros:-Students were very engaged after opening and organizing parts and materials.-Allowed students to tinker with individual components to see how they worked without initial instruction (Makerspace mentality).-Encourages collaboration as a small group activity.-App…

Pros
  • exciting and very smart kit. easy to understand and lots of fun.
Cons
  • Requires adult supervision for safe use

Awesome for inventors and builders

Our son got this as an early Christmas gift and loved it. His brothers got the other Little Bits kits and all were thrilled. Half the fun of these toys is putting them together. The directions must be easy to follow because all of our kids were able to do them pretty easily (7 year old needed adult help but it wasn't a headache!). IThe directions for the kids to follow are on the app, which I normally wouldn't like, but it's just a simple instructional video that they loved. The toy does not…

Pros
  • Great product! My five year old loves this and it’s fun to use it with him.
Cons
  • Batteries not included, additional cost required

Fun way to introduce kids to electronics and engineering

littleBits are great for introducing kids to science and engineering, but kits are not cheap. Most of the basic ones start at $60 and an investment of several hundred dollars is needed to acquire a variety of sensors, parts, and motors for more complex projects. Beyond the monetary cost, however, is the intangible value of opening up your child's mind to exploration and science at an early age.Of course, you could put together something similar with an electronics kit and breadboard for a…

Pros
  • Hours of in-app play and activities: in-app activities and step-by-step instructions guide kids through building fun, electronic inventions, like a room-protecting alarm or a Navigator to help maneuver in the dark!
Cons
  • Not designed for group play, may be more suited to solo play

another great STEAM product!

The mobile phone guide makes it super easy to follow each project to completion. Plus, it's great for my youngest nephew because it goes through what each bit actually does in a way that doesn't get him frustrated! Building each project together is also really fun!

Pros
  • An educational gift for every kid on your holiday list - especially budding makers and inventors!
Cons
  • May not be as stimulating or entertaining as screen-based toys

It’s good at a certain price.

My 8 year old son was able to build on his own and really enjoyed some of the projects. It was a Christmas gift, we paid $55 on Walmart. I would say it’s worth that but definitely NOT for $99!

Pros
  • Smart device required for video instructions: inventor app requires either iPhone (iOS 10.0 or later) or Android (5.0 or later) is required. Amazon devices are not compatible at this time.
Cons
  • Some children may find it frustrating to use due to the technical nature of the kit

Awesome Experience / Super Fun!

My 8 year old nephew was mesmerized by the idea of creating a prosthetic robotic arm as the front cover of the Base Inventor Kit showcases. When he finally was able to build this invention he fell in love with it. Take it one step further he then added one of the awesome "sound trigger" bits to his robotic arm and all of a sudden when he said "open" the robotic arm would "open" and when he said "close" the arm would close. Unreal I KNOW! The other activities in the app were super fun to build…

Pros
  • Adorable! Unique, easy to understand, makes a good gift for kids.
Cons
  • Can be expensive compared to other creative toys

Great, but not perfect.

This is looking to be a great "inventor" kit.well made components, clear and fun directions with the app, interesting projects. How about an app for MacBook? My only suggestion, so far, is to include a hard-shell case to house all the components and cardboard pieces. I'd pay another $5 for such.

Pros
  • Science Kits & Toys
Cons
  • May be too complex for younger children to understand and use

Great flexible building! Lots of options!

We just got our kit and the kids spent all afternoon creating all sorts of inventions! The simple snap design makes it easy to see if the pieces are connected correctly, and the overall options are amazing! My kids had a great time "wizarding” with the voice activation feature.

Pros
  • No grown-ups necessary: kids can easily assemble with step-by-step, in-app instruction videos.
Cons
  • May not hold the attention of children for long periods

Nice starter set for developing coders

This is a great base build and learn set. It teaches the fundamentals and leads you into building on your base design.Good skills development with creative learning encouraged!

Pros
  • Everything included: from the 9V battery to Tech sensors, LED, servo, paper templates, stickers, and free inventor app.
Cons
  • Some functions may not work as well as advertised

educational and fun, lots of options for inventing

bought this set for my 11 year old cousin after he had used littlebits in school and wanted some for himself. the pieces are magnetic and it was cool to see how quickly he was able to put together a circuit. you need a phone for the instructions, which are easy to follow and the inventions get harder as you advance through. he seems really into it, look forward to seeing more cool stuff that he makes.

Pros
  • Learning & Education
Cons
  • May not be suitable for children with certain disabilities or learning difficulties

Good educational toy

Good fun toy to keep the kids busy. Instructional and informative, a lot of fun to break it down and build different things. Two concerns: 1) Servo Motor did not last long, it died within the first few builds. But support provided some troubleshooting tips and then a replacement. 2) the shapes are made using paper/cardboard which is very flimsy and does not last long after a few builds.

Pros
  • Toys & Games
Cons
  • May require advanced technical skills to fully utilize all components

Awesome invention toy for kids

I bought this kit for my 10 year old nephew. He love it. He even managed to build a robot arm that picks up his dirty socks! Genius!

Pros
  • Encourages collaboration and teamwork: The LittleBits Base Inventor Kit is an excellent tool for group work, as children can work together to brainstorm ideas, build their creations, and test them out. This fosters teamwork and helps children develop important social skills
Cons
  • May not provide enough value for the high price tag

Stimulates creativity

So far, our three young nieces have been mostly interested in the arts -- dance, music and drawing. But this littleBits inventor kit has them expanding their horizons. For starters, the smartphone app instructions gets them hooked immediately -- because it involves a smartphone. (The app worked fine for us, by the way.)Don't let the small box fool you. There's plenty in it for hours of fun & learning. The "bits" are quality made and we've had no problems with any of them. This kit is recommended…

Pros
  • The perfect introduction: interested in getting your kid a stem toy but don't know where to start? The base inventor kit includes everything your kid needs to start inventing out of the box.
Cons
  • Noise level from some components may be disturbing for some children

Great intro kit for young inventors

I bought this gift for my nephew’s 10th birthday. He’s always been a creative kid who is interested in how things work. He was able to get his first invention (the stuff protector) up and running in no time and was fending off intruders to his bedroom. The other inventions are both fun and thoughtful - my nephew especially loves the gripper, a hand extension operated by sound. There is a nice variety of activities in this kit, and since the Bits are able to be interchanged, there are countless…

Pros
  • Provides endless possibilities for learning and fun
Cons
  • May not be as educational as other STEM toys on the market

My 7 year old loved it!

My 7 year old loved it! There were many different options. We played with it for 2 hours and haven't even scratched the surface. There are still a bunch of things to make .My son especially liked making the alarm for his room. Great job Little Bits!

Pros
  • My grandchildren are having a blast inventing things I don’t understand. They are very engrossed.
Cons
  • Requires access to a tablet or computer to utilize all functions

Wish I had this growing up!

Such an engaging way to introduce my nephew to a variety of concepts - basic electronics, robotics, problem solving, etc. He's had a blast tinkering on his own with the app to guide him but we've also really enjoyed coming up with new "problems" to solve around the house whenever I visit.

Pros
  • My kids ripped the box open and have started building with 15 minutes of getting the kit. Amazing.
Cons
  • May not be suitable for children under age 8

Great item in my review

My son loved this. He has been wanting Little Bits for some time now, and this was a good starter kit for him. Thanks for attention!

Pros
  • What you get: build and customize a voice-activated robotic gripper arm, then transform it into new creative inventions that improve their room, help their community, or save the world.
Cons
  • Pieces may be lost easily, making the kit incomplete and less useful
