Star Tech Supper Speed Succeed

I bought this to backup my son's Mac Book Pro hard drive after the motherboard was accidentally washed. The instructions that came with the disc don't mention Mac compatibility, only PC instructions. Just in case, seeing no reason why it shouldn't work with a Mac drive and a Mac computer, I contacted tech support via live chat who confirmed it was Mac compatible. I followed the prompts to insert the disc and turn the unit on. No problem, to my son's relief we were able to successfully maintain…

Works well Hard drive accessory

I'm disappointed to learn that my previous USB->SATA toaster (different brand) had a 2TB limit and this one didn't. The lesson is to read the specifications carefully. This device looks pretty well built for this type of product. It's heavier than some, I hope this indicates better quality plastic. Good size rubber feet. Comes with a USB 3 cable. The power button is also a busy indicator, which is nice. E-SATA is NOT supported, although the case has a cutout.

Great product for hard drive cases

This thing saved a life. The hardest part about switching to a laptop was the lack of flexibility. Sometimes I have to take the drive out of the case and see what's on it or format it or whatever. This dock is perfect for that. I like that it's USB 3, it's fast enough for my needs. The power button is very clicky and the power/activity light is blinking very brightly. I could use a lower brightness, but that's nothing a piece of tape can't fix. I also like the reset button.

Works great with Linux

I've used two of these successfully on two different systems running Fedora 17 Linux. Both docking stations work great without any special drivers or settings. Performance is outstanding: 3 to 4 times faster than a USB 2 dock and almost as fast as internal SATA connections. They offer *exactly* what I expect from a USB 3.0 docking station and the price is very good. These docks don't suffer from the intermittent disconnects I've seen with other docks. For desktop systems, I use these docking…

Works great, soft power button

This is a good hard drive dock, but I prefer some of the older StarTech models (earlier USB 2.0 models). Keep in mind that this dock has a "soft" power button, meaning it's not a hard switch that stays on. If the power fails or you remove the drive while it's on, the dock won't turn back on unless you press the power button again. OS, but there are problems reading partitions). It only seems to happen with these two specific drives (ST500LM000 and ST500DM002) on this dock, they work fine with a

works very well in the Computers & Accessories category

I have been involved with computers professionally since 1994. StarTech is one of those companies that makes reliable but a bit boring computer peripherals. They tend to avoid snagging the latest and greatest "things" and wait until they see a peripheral that has staying power. That's what the Doc is. All of my clients are currently using external docking stations to secure their servers and I have tried several docking stations from different manufacturers. Early USB2 docking stations often…

SuperSpeed and SuperValue

My laptop broke recently. It was the motherboard, not the hard drive, so I didn't lose any data. I also recently installed a new desktop system. The accident reminded me that I need a backup system. One that was quick and easy to use. I had an old version of the Startech external drive that I hardly used, but had no complaints either. However, I wanted a device that would make it easier to insert/remove the disc. Having one of their old units, I researched the Startech product line and found…
