I had several NAS for my home; from Synology, QNAP and homemade (FreeNAS/ZFS and CentOS/BTRFS). While I still have a Synology DS411+ at home and an HP Proliant N40L (homemade NAS), I was glad Netgear connected to BTRFS. Netgear is currently the cheapest NAS with BTRFS on the market (at the time of writing this article). Synology will release or release DSM 6.x with BTRFS only for more expensive models. To keep this review short, I will only list the pros and cons of this device. PROS: * BTRFS (yes!) * Dual NIC with IEEE 802.3ad LACP support * Quad-core 1.4 GHz processor * Static routes * No HD-to-tray tools * SSH with PKI but still buggy CONS: * Initial setup . There is no app like Synology. So if it freezes, you have to press a few keys to restore factory settings or start the initial setup again. You are almost flying blind.* The software/apps and their web interface are not as good as Synology and QNAP* 70 applications available for installation and many of them older versions* RAM not upgradable, but at least 2GB* performance no monitor (install Cacti)* no 10GbE (not expandable) Potential for improvement: Snapshots - I can plan this (daily, weekly, monthly etc.) and have the option to set a quota. But where is the option to delete old snapshots (scheduled)? You must delete snapshots manually. This NAS has a lot to offer. It's by no means perfect, definitely not five stars. But I'll refrain from that and wait for more updates in the future. With the right upgrades, this could easily replace Synology and QNAP.
