These adjustable pliers are a great option for removing over tightened oil filters that a "professional" mechanic has twisted at the shop. When I put them on, I just hand tighten them, just like you, but these guys love to tighten them. I've had good luck with filter cup wrenches that attach to your 3/8" ratchet, but they must be perfectly sized (correct number of grooves and correct diameter) for your particular filter. It works with any size filter so if you're dealing with a new filter or helping a friend, it will likely fit. The only issue you have with these filter pliers is that not all filters are side accessible (check the car before buying). up to 3 different sizes and works with almost any filter size * Good grip quality * Quality construction and materials with coated steel to prevent rust * Allows a firm grip on the filter groove to remove over-tightened filters WHAT CAN BE BETTER:* I have seen some of these filter pliers with a 15-30 degree offset, which gives you a better chance of getting them into the filter grooves. Some don't give you much lateral access. This feature allows them to handle more situations. HOT TIPS: *Do not overtighten the filter when installing *Replace the washer on the oil plug and do not overtighten (do not remove the fluffy threads in the oil pan) *Make sure the old filter gasket is in place loosens from faceplate when removing old filter* Be sure to lubricate the new filter gasket with some oil before installation* Pre-fill the new filter if installed vertically to allow oil to enter the system sooner on first use
