This is definitely the best tool when you are trying to measure objects. I've wanted to lay new tiles for a long time and was struggling to get the perfect measurements for the doorway and pillar. You use several different thin pieces of plastic to give the impression of the object you want to measure. Tiles, carpets and the like can be laid without any problems. This comes in two different sizes. Blue is the tallest and red is the shortest. It is very easy to use, you just have to press the device against the area to be measured. Note that you don't have to apply a TON of pressure. Once you get the correct measurement, move the black plastic sheet to that spot and lock it in place, then start tracing. It comes with a basic graphite pencil so you don't have to buy or look for one. I really wish there was some sort of tote bag included to keep them together, but that's more my preference. This will give you the most accurate measurement you can get, so you can just cut whatever you need to fit the area. For me, this was a fairly accurate measurement of my doorway, allowing me to cut the best when installing my new carpet. In general, this is a very good and reliable tool. It makes your life a lot easier so you don't have to sit around and do a bunch of trial and error measurements. I also don't recommend trying to force the device. You just have to press slowly and it will take shape. If force is used, the space between the plastic parts can be damaged.
