Review on Mercer Culinary Damascus 3 5 Inch Handles by Dushawn Walker

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Nice blades, wish the handle was less rounded for a better grip

I got my first damask kitchen knife a few years ago and have been Since then they have been updating the rest of their knives, trying to find the best for each task and passing them on to friends and family. They are beautiful, durable, functional and unpretentious in care. At least some of them. I have damaged several wooden handle models by accidentally putting them in the dishwasher. Their handles are very strong and of course the blades are stainless steel. I've found them to work great in the dishwasher as long as it's not set to heat dry, which I think dulls the rim a bit. I usually just hand clean them when I use them, which isn't hard because the texture is more like a difference in dissimilar metals that have been lightly etched. It's what you see, not what you feel. This is a pretty good set. The damask looks beautiful like raindrops and the pattern is bold enough to be clearly visible, but it's not something you'll notice from across the room. They are well made with no rough spots or sharp edges. They are individually wrapped and sealed in nice boxes, making them easy to take apart and give to different people. I have chosen not to use the memory block. It folds back at an angle and has decent footing, and I like the idea of a magnetic block rather than a block with holes because it's easier to clean. It just didn't make me feel safe. Knives stick to it, but rotate easily. I constantly had images of me being hit against something and knives falling in all directions. Part of the problem with the block is that the knife handles are pretty heavy. The balance doesn't seem bad or anything, but it goes further than I think it needs to. When it comes to design, form takes precedence over functionality. A paring knife I don't think I will use. It's just the wrong shape. I often hold a paring knife with the blade pointing towards my thumb and it feels unnatural. I have a DaddyChef Damascus steel paring knife that is much better shaped but has a wooden handle. Most knives have handles that are too round and too straight. I've cut myself a few times with kitchen knives when I slipped my hand on the handle, so I don't think this is a good place to prioritize style over ergonomics. My hand also wants to slide up the handle. Not to the blade or anything, just so I don't get her where I wanted to. A stronger grip actually reduces control. The bread knife is interesting. The blade is not sharp. I think that's the way it should be because all other knives are very sharp. Maybe it retains its spiciness better when going through a hard crust. All in all, this is a good knife set. My favorite similar knife is from JWing but I think they only make one style so it was nice to get a set. Not good enough for me to mix and match my kitchen in the same style.
