When I got this laser level, the vertical line was not working. After playing around with it a bit, I contacted Tavool support via email. A reply came within 12 hours asking for a video or picture showing the problem; I decided to make a short video showing the vertical line not working and sent it back (honestly I didn't expect the problem to be solved for at least a couple of weeks). I was surprised to find that within 12 hours I received another email reply asking if I would like a refund or a replacement, to which I replied with a replacement and my address (after all I have ordered this to get the job done and the job still needs to be done). Three days later, a new and fully functional laser was delivered to me. The color convinced me. Also, I can keep the old one that still does a great job with the horizontal line and I won't regret beating the crap out of this crap. that I borrowed from my father. It's not that hard, heavy, or light. But for over $150 less, I'd say it's good enough. A big advantage (compared to the PLS device I use) is the "lock" function, which allows you to use the line as a laser ruler instead of a level. Given that most things in my house aren't truly level, getting things straight and parallel or perpendicular to the most obvious reference point for the job is far more important than leveling things exactly - like a 12-foot -Ledge just set will be noticeably closer to the ceiling on one side. Using this laser level for large spans is also very practical, although it is limited to less than 180ΒΊ of the horizontal beam (in fact it is 120ΒΊ), so on some projects you will have to change the position of the laser, for example if you are going to have three cabinets install adjacent walls of the room. Since the first block I got didn't work, as soon as I got a working replacement I disassembled the failed block to look inside and try to isolate the problem. Surprisingly, the problem wasn't the incredibly thin filament wires that drive the real lasers (they connect to the power controller and have to be thin so they don't interfere with the movement of the lasers on their outboard bearings). It was actually the laser unit itself. However, the unit appears to be relatively well made internally and should withstand moderate use, suitable for most types of DIYers, and opening it up only added to my positive impression of the unit itself. Overall this is a good buy and should do a good job. Do yourself a favor and get one, you'll need it more often than you think. Do yourself a second favor and buy a cheap or used tripod to put on and you'll be amazed you've ever played around with a spirit level and bubble level. If I never have to awkwardly hold a long spirit level against an uneven wall, if I'm up a ladder trying to get it right and then draw a line, and then have a spouse whose interpretation of "level" is different than yours, so you gotta do it all over again. I will be a very happy person.
