When I buy a new kitchen appliance, I tend to do a ridiculous (unhealthy?) amount of research. I research to the point of going in circles for months trying to figure out what the absolute best topic is in the category I'm interested in right now. As a result, I can finally convince myself that I absolutely need the very best slide. ever invented, and then I have to step back, pull myself together, and start over with more realistic expectations. In the case of Zojirushi, I felt the buyer's regret as soon as I sent off the purchase (but wait, I have no regrets). I've only recently started looking into Asian cooking and decided I needed a rice cooker. My only experience with rice so far has been scorching rice on the bottom of a cheap pot or throwing one of those Uncle Ben bags into boiling water. I KNOW that a relatively cheap rice cooker would probably do the trick, but my aforementioned ridiculously boring research kept leading me to the Zojirushi, and more specifically this model (using "Neuro Fuzzy" technology. I only have the 10-cup version ). because I imagined myself cooking for large groups of people (actually that hasn't happened yet). Okay, so here's what I found: This thing is amazing. not something to cure the disease but damn cool. basic directions and made brown rice for my first use. He came out perfect. I didn't wash the rice, I didn't do anything special. I just dumped the rice and water, pushed the button and made brown rice perfect. Since then I've been making a lot more sushi rice and jasmine rice, which also turn out perfectly. I like it when it's sticky, so I usually add more than the recommended amount of water. I also steam veggies in it (with a stainless steel steamer placed inside - I know I'll probably ruin the coating on the bowl) and it works just fine too. I often order things online and they can be good, they can be ok, they can be terrible. but rarely do I get exactly what I hoped for. Alongside my WΓΌsthof Classic Ikon knives and the KitchenAid mixer, the Zojirushi NS-ZCC18 is the only device that really lived up to the hype. The only small issue is that I can do without the weird Hello Kitty-style alarm clock that goes off when the rice is done. but it's not too loud, so I'll live. ;) PPS A well known Asian master (just a great home cook) scolded me for hours for having to wash/rinse the rice first. Since then I started doing it before I joined Zoji. is there a difference I'm not sure. but it's better than yelling in chinese.
