I have several soldering irons including quality traditional Weller products and although I have recently asked questions about some of their products (mostly value for money compared to unfamiliar brands) the Weller brand is a reliable name. The problem with my fancy stations, though, is that they're too big to carry around, and even with my old stationary temperature station with an iron, I still have to lug around an extension cord somewhere if I want to use them off the bench. As a result, I regularly do assembly jobs on my tractor and other farm equipment that involve just twisting and isolating rather than a solid connection that I could make with soldering. This little iron should help take care of it while remembering where I hid it when I need it! I have no idea how long a pair of AAs will last (I doubt it will), but I'm hoping the rechargeable batteries will too. They have to deliver a lot of current, but the lower voltage can reduce the overall power they can deliver. Whilst I can see that others have issues, mine certainly warmed up nicely in a very reasonable time (probably less than 30 seconds on new batteries) and was able to just melt the solder. I've had no reason to actually work with it, so there's always a chance it'll choke when trying to heat the big wire, but so far I'm pretty impressed. The lack of a bracket is not a problem for this application either. The iron lays flat on any flat surface and the tip is far from the surface and if you want to avoid burning yourself on the hot tip just put the cap on. The cover also locks the power switch in the off position. Overall I would say this is very good for the target application.
