I have kept fish for most of my life. Of course, nitrate reduction is our top priority. So I do 4 experiments. Let me explain, first = 55 gallons of cichlid, swamp work with Biohome Ultimate. Good result for ammonia and nitrites, but ZERO for nitrates. I like this concept, but it's a very expensive solution just for ammonia and nitrite. Second = wooden ship bioreactor (scaled down) for my 55 gallons of dark water. Specifically, setting for nitrate reduction = 20-30% nitrate reduction. But this is only for black water, will stain your water. Third = BCB basket (watch it on YouTube), in anticipation of my 3 month bacterial growth mark. Fourth = 30 gallon, 10 gallon swamp with water hyacinth. Surprisingly a 30-40% reduction in nitrate reduction (can be as high as 50%). If you have used a water hyacinth, never throw the plant outside (it is an invasive plant). Also provide very good full spectrum LED lighting. Okay, so for a good nitrogen cycle product, Biohome is very, very expensive, with the exception of nitrates (yet). As a result, you can find an equally high-quality and much cheaper product. Without giving you product names (YouTube rules), please check the ceramic rings and balls. So many good options for a fraction of the price. When my nitrate levels start to drop (my biodome has been up since last May) I will update this review.
