Review on Mungyo Square Pastel Assorted B441R078 7003A by Karla Richter

Great starter set and great price!

I received them today. I drew them on black paper and partly painted them on white watercolor paper (Fabriano Studio, 25% cotton, 140 lbs, cold pressed - student quality). I post a photo of the partial painting. I have a few Pan pastels which I love and a large selection of Prismacolors Nupastels which are considered hard pastels. I realized I needed softer pastels but didn't want to invest a lot of money until I was sure I was going to use them. I also have a few Rembrandt pastels which are also considered average in terms of softness and mostly get good marks. Mungio seem to be at least of the same quality. The only negative I can say about them is that although they come on black paper (Mi-Teintes pastel paper) the beautiful vibrant color almost disappears with every attempt at blending. She. I've attached another photo of it. Since this paper is designed for pastels, even multi-layered ones, I've also tried adding layers and then blending, but without much success. I also added a few pastel swatches to compare the subtle opacity without the need for blending. However, the pastel color is not as vivid as unmixed mungyos. Bottom line, mongyos are quite light on black paper, but only when not mixed. Maybe a few unblended layers will solve part of the problem. On the other hand, mungyo goes great with white paper. The last thing I want to point out is that this product has at least one review on YouTube. One of the key takeaways is that the type of paper they're used on makes a significant difference. Bottom line, despite their small size (one of the reasons the price is so low compared to the quality), these pastels are excellent value for money, especially for beginners and people like me who don't want to spend money on something, where you are not sure what you need, but good quality to get good results! UPDATE: I wanted to experiment a bit more with mungyos on black pastel paper, which I did. The bottom line is that they work best on Pan Pastel backgrounds. See photos with notes!
