This closure is the perfect solution for keeping dogs out of the trash. We originally used a cat opening gate but it was very cumbersome to carry clothes baskets through the gate. We had to screw the handle into the door and the doorpost keeps two of my very strong Labs out of the basement and the bedding. I will say my 65 lb lab climbed through the hole in the pet gate we used but absolutely can't get through that latch (and she's trying). You can move the latch on the door frame to increase or decrease the opening. However, if your dog is very small (or very skinny), you may need to position the latch to make the opening smaller.
