If you submerge your feet in water above the level of your socks, they are not waterproof as water can definitely get in (for obvious reasons). For us, the purpose of wearing it is to isolate our feet during the cold water hikes we take. Instead of cold water hitting our feet, we have this layer of protection. Both my husband and I have these socks and they work great. We've had them for many years and they hold up great. I don't put them in the washer and dryer, I hand wash them and hang them on a hanger.
