Review on πŸ”’ Ultimate Protection: Ubiquiti Networks Unifi Security Gateway Pro (USG-PRO-4) by Jeremy Hong

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Reliable UTM gateway and sound issue fixed!

I've wanted to switch to a full-fledged 3rd physical layer UTM gateway for a long time. Before that I used Sophos Home UTM. Already invested in UniFi for WiFi switching and management. It was a very logical progression. This review focuses on throughput issues with UTM gateways and fan noise. Overall, despite some caveats, this is a solid buy. For example, the DHCP service capabilities are very limited, but something tells me that people are not buying this SG because of its amazing DHCP capabilities. So why switch from my Sophos UTM, which is a full-featured, enterprise-class firewall? Gigabit Internet and Threat Management. I had no idea about additional threat controls until my first foray into gigabit internet was down to 120Mbps. Evil people. Even all UniFi Security Gateways have speed limitations due to the processing overhead of using deep packet inspection (threat management in UniFi land). I'm happy to report that the USG-PRO-4 is a good compromise between the regular SG and the high-end XG that comes with a hefty price tag! Now I can get speeds of 400Mbps and up with DPI enabled. This is a huge win for me as Ubiquiti officially rates the USG-PRO-4 at 250Mbps DPI. Fixed the bandwidth issue. I focused on the fan noise, which isn't terrible but is loud enough to be SO annoying. Not good people either. After reading some fan replacement reviews. That's how I did it, I'm attaching a photo. If you've ever changed PC fans, it's very easy. If not, watch the video. Result: quieter sound! The specific fan you need: Noctua NF-A4x20 FLX. Look for that specific model. Expect significant compensation from Noctua for their packaging. Really epic, but why?
