Thread color ran out in the wash

I bought a cross stitch and flowers for my first cross stitch project and I really enjoyed it. It was easy to follow and I was so proud when I finished. My pride turned to disappointment when I washed my project to remove the stamped background. All colors are merged in white space. It destroyed him. I was thinking of sewing the background white to cover it up, but now I'm just going to try again with a different pattern that doesn't have a lot of white in it.
